LACK OF, Desing and Quality of Los Angeles
LACK OF, Design and Quality of Los Angeles is a hybrid between artwork-catalog, user manual and urban study. The name of the publication derives from an instruction manual for assembling a shelf from the IKEA furniture series LACK. The manual was lying on a San Pedro sidewalk while I collected “art supplies” for my found object art works. In LACK OF the manual bridges different elements of my art work: “Kinetic Sculpture Machines” meet “Illuminated Objects”, material studies documented in my studio cross with collected “curbside ephemera” and urban observations. Featured art work titles like “Density Bonus”, “LA Wobble”, “Drilling to see the Light”, “Home is where my Castle is” or “Unfortunately it’s all Connected” place the publication in the midst of a recent (re)development boom along the Port of Los Angeles waterfront and within the neighborhoods of San Pedro.
